The 1st International Symposium on Fusion Materials was held from 16 to 18 October 2011 at the Toba Hotel International in Toba, Mie. The Symposium was opened by Professor Takashi Kato (The University of Tokyo, Project Leader) who outlined the the project and its goals and defined the purpose of the 1st International Symposium. The Symposium featured Plenary Lectures from five distinguished invited speakers - Hiroshi Nishihara (The University of Tokyo), Prof. Helmut Cölfen (Univ. of Konstanz, Germany), Prof. Nico A.J.M. Sommerdijk (Eindhoven Univ. of Tech., The Netherlands), Prof. Fiona Meldrum (Univ. of Leeds, UK) and Arimitsu Usuki (Toyota Central R&D Labs., Inc.). The program also included 12 lectures from selected project members and 52 poster presentations. More than 110 attendees participated in the three days of the Symposium.
