Nematic liquid crystals have been widely used as electro-optical materials. Fixation of liquid crystal alignment after removal of electric fields is one of the requirements for next generation information materials such as electronic papers.

In the present study, memorization of the alignment of nematic liquid crystals in electric fields is achieved by incorporating small amounts of self-assembled fibers into the liquid crystals. Rewritable pattern formation of light-scattering and transparent states has been performed by a combination of thermal and electric stimuli.
